I commit to honor, respect and protect the sacred birth space and birthing experience.

Peace,

I’m Raya Williams!

I am a Certified Professional Midwife, Certified Lactation Counselor, Home Birth Doula, Perinatal Nutrition Educator, Herbalist, Reiki Practitioner and Generational Healer.

I am also a third year student at Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Davenport Iowa. I will be graduating as a Doctor of Chiropractic in the summer of 2025.

After graduating with my undergraduate degree, I dedicated myself supporting Generational Health and Community Wellness. I’ve been holding space as a Restorative Yoga Teacher and Holistic Wellness Professional since 2018.

The realization that I needed to enhance my skills to effectively support pregnant students attending my classes, encouraged me enroll in a comprehensive Prenatal Yoga Training through Amala School of Yoga.

An amazing Black Doula, Student Midwife and IBCLC, Nicole Miles, walked into our training and passionately shared about her work with a local birth justice organization. The lack of support experienced by Black women birthing in a hospital setting was deeply rooted in each experience that was shared.

Over the next year, I studied pregnancy and birth on my own time while supporting families as a birth and postpartum doula. Several of my clients shared their experiences with community home birth, inspiring me to learn more about creating positive and sacred birthing experiences for Black families, at Home.

While listening to an episode of Homecoming Podcast, hosted by Chae Pounds and Isis A. Rose, I was introduced to the various pathways of becoming a community midwife. In 2020, I transitioned into attending home births as a student midwife.

Homecoming Podcast features the stories of Black families who choose to birth at home!

During my three and a half years as a student midwife, I had the pleasure of learning through apprenticeship with three Certified Professional Midwives. My training and academic studies were directed by the protocols developed by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) Portfolio Evaluation Process.

In July of 2023, I completed the requirements for the program to earn the credential of Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) from NARM. In December of 2023, I completed the requirements to earn the Midwifery Bridge Certificate from NARM.

Throughout my time as a birth professional, I have been blessed to support families planning to birth in all setting including hospitals, birth centers and at home. In addition to serving as a community midwife, I teach perinatal nutrition, lactation education and CPR to families and birth professionals.

“ My focus is on providing holistic prenatal, birth and postpartum care to families planning a sacred + safe birth experience, at home. ”

Chiropractic

As a senior student midwife I was graced with the opportunity to travel to Rock Island, Illinois to complete my clinical requirements. Little did I know - I would be relocating less than 15 minutes away from the first ever school of Chiropractic.

I was quickly introduced to the value of Chiropractic care by my preceptor, Sarah Moore, CPM, LM. Having never been adjusted before in my life, Sarah recommended that I go “check out Palmer College of Chiropractic” and get adjusted!

After visiting Palmer, with faith and very little understanding of Chiropractic, I decided that I would become a Chiropractor.

Over the past three years, as I have studied Chiropractic, I have come to believe that the Midwives Model of Care in combination with Chiropractic care should be the standard of care for all low risk birthing parents across the United States.

Sacred + Safe Birth Experiences

I share the belief with community midwives, that based on the best available evidence, home should be the default choice of birth location for most people. I also respect and understand that there are times and reasons that families choose to birth in the hospital.

There are also times when home birth is no longer the safest option for the birthing parent or baby, and in those times I am extremely grateful for the valuable and lifesaving care that hospitals are able to provide.

It is an honor to support birthing families and my intention to provide options for families choosing to reclaim the historical tradition of birthing at home, with love, surrounded by family and trusted midwives.

I am here to provide support as you navigate choices and experiences throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond. If you think that I may be the midwife for you - let’s find out!
